One is that you should check to see exactly what type of links someone is placing on your site. Don't just accept a batch of links with out looking to see where each one links to. Also don't let your site turn into a link farm. Keep your links content related and high quality. Don't link to spam sites of sites that have little content. A good link should look like it has a real purpose on your page, not just some random off topic link.
